Is This A Test Mule Or The Actual 2017 Subaru Impreza?

Last week, Subaru sketched some teasers of its next-gen Impreza Concept, but we’ve captured a prototype of the compact hatch on the road.

However, we’re not entirely convinced that it’s the actual production car as it could be a deceivingly disguised test mule, and that’s because even though the rear-door and –quarter panel windows differ, the overall shape and many other details, including the front-door glass-housing and mirrors are identical to the current car.

At this point, we’re suspecting that it could be a hybrid mule using parts from both the existing and the next Impreza – that or Subaru is going for a very conservative makeover retaining most of the existing model’s styling; it wouldn’t be the first car manufacture to do so…

For what it’s worth, the teaser pictures of the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show study suggest that the production car will borrow design cues from Subaru’s sexy-looking WRX Concept from 2013.

Beyond the sheetmetal, the new Impreza will be the first car to ride on the Japanese brand’s new modular chassis architecture named “Subaru Global Platform” that will eventually underpin all of its core range, including a future full-size crossover.

There’s also been talk lately of Subaru developing a new-generation of horizontally opposed engines with direct-injection and cylinder deactivation to further improve fuel economy and emissions.

The range of Impreza models will include the pictured five-door hatchback, a four-door sedan and a replacement for the taller-riding XV Crosstrek. Expect to see the new models making their showroom premieres late next year.
