Departing Lamborghini president and chief executive Stephan Winkelmann has reconfirmed the marque’s commitment to naturally-aspirated engines saying that they still have some life in them.
While speaking with Autocar recently, the boss who’s heading to Audi Quattro, said that through treatments to the exhausts of its existing models, it can reduce CO2 emissions enough to not yet warrant forced induction.
“Going to turbos is about reducing CO2, not improving air quality,” he said.
“We can clean our exhaust with after-treatment. So we can go for a while yet. We think buyers see the sound and response as one of our USPs [unique selling points], but we’re not glued to naturally aspirated engines. If we have to change, we will.”
These statements come just a couple of months after R&D boss Maurizio Reggiani confirmed that the upcoming Urus SUV will use a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. We can only conclude then that he’s talking about Lambo’s supercars, namely the Huracan and the Aventador.
