As consumers continue to prefer crossovers and SUVs over traditional sedans and wagons, the North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year (NACTOY) is closely following this trend.

Starting from 2017, awards for car and truck/utility will be joined by a third category, SUV of the year.  “SUVs’ booming popularity is changing the auto industry. Customers
use SUVs for everything from work to family transportation to off-road
recreation. The NACTOY jury recognizes that with the new award,” said  NACTOY president, Mark Phelan.

Vehicles eligible for the 2017 awards will be selected in the Car, Truck/Utility and SUV segments after three rounds of voting and three finalists, for each category, will be announced on December 6, 2016, prior to the big winners, which will be revealed at the North American International Auto Show, in Detroit, next year, on January 9.

Initiated in 1994, the program, which “honors excellence in innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value“, is judged by 60 professional automotive journalists from the United States and Canada, who were overseen, until this year, by an organizing committee, replaced with officers.
