Lamborghini Sells Record Number Of Supercars

If you’ve been thinking that the supercar is going the way of the dodo, with electric cars and hybrid crossovers taking their place, think again. In fact Lamborghini alone has sold more cars this month and over the last half-year than it has in its 53-year history.

The Italian manufacturer reports that it sold 416 of its supercars in June, setting a new monthly record for the company. Exceptional though that figure is for Lamborghini, it’s not an isolated blip. The company reports that it crested the 2,000-unit mark for the first time over the first half of 2016, selling 2,013 vehicles – almost as many as it sold in the whole of 2012.

By comparison, the Bolognese automaker sold 1,882 vehicles in the first half of 2015, making for a 7 percent increase over last year. Sales were fairly evenly distributed over its three major regions, with the Americas, Asia Pacific, and EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) regions each accounting for a third of global sales.

The Huracan range accounted for the lion’s share of the company’s sales, amounting to 1,370 units. Introduced 24 months ago, the Huracan figures alone represent a whopping 87-percent increase over the same period from the preceding Gallardo’s launch.

The Aventador accounted for the remaining 643 units, marking an even more impressive increase of 127 percent over the 58 months since the previous Murcielago’s launch.

What’s more is that the figures only promise to increase, and increase dramatically, once the Urus arrives. The crossover is expected to double the company’s sales, equaling or surpassing the sales of the Huracan and Aventador combined.

In relative terms, the figures place Lamborghini somewhere in between Ferrari and Aston Martin. The Prancing Horse marque sold 1,882 on the first quarter of this year, or nearly as much as Lamborghini did in the past two quarters. Meanwhile Aston Martin sold 3,615 vehicles last year, which is less than Lamborghini is poised to sell this year at this rate. Both Ferrari and Aston Martin have more complete model lines than Lamborghini does.
