Three years ago, Peugeot UK gave its apprentices a challenge, asking them to choose a historic model and not just restore it to form but also enhance it in any way possible.

They ended up choosing one of the automaker’s most iconic vehicles, the widely-celebrated 205 GTi. Initially, the team considered making a track-only car, however it was eventually decided that a more “close-to-original” model should be their goal, plus the obvious twist. The project got underway with the car being stripped, and every single one of its components labeled. The running gear was overhauled during the team’s training weeks, when they also debated how much power should be added.

Eventually they fitted it with a more potent Peugeot 1.9-liter petrol Mi16 engine as they went on to meticulously rebuilt the 205 GTi piece by piece for the next two years.

Mods include the Mi16 engine with factory fuel injection, an ITG intake kit, 4-2-1 stainless steel exhaust manifold and Mongoose stainless steel exhaust. They also improved handling and braking performance by adding Bilstein shock absorbers and springs, as well as stainless steel braided flexi-hoses. A new rear beam was also added to the build, while the interior got fully refurbished and reupholstered seats.

Since being completed, the 205 GTi is still attracting the interest of new apprentices and even gaining the interest of senior managers who can easily recall the times in which such a car was considered brand new.

“Having driven the car, I have to say this isn’t just one of the best 205 GTis I’ve ever drive, it is one of the best cars I have driven,” said Jason Giblett, Apprentice Program Manager. “My congratulations go to all involved, I can’t wait to see what the next apprentices will create, but they have a very tough act to follow.”
