Seat’s UK boss Richard Harrison has revealed that demand for the company’s new Ateca SUV is expected to outstrip supply when it hits the market later this year.

While speaking with Autocar, Harrison said that only a limited number of Atecas will be produced before the end of 2016 and that throughout 2017, demands is still likely to exceed supply once production reaches capacity.

“I suspect the positive reaction will mean that demand outstrips supply throughout 2017, too,” he said. We are fighting with the factory for more cars, but the positive side of this equation is that demand will keep residual values high, and that just makes Ateca an even more appealing proposition.”

While the Ateca may be Seat’s very first SUV, the car has launched with high praise and been well applauded by much of the automotive press.

It’s underpinned by the Volkswagen Group’s familiar modular MQB platform and rivals cars like the Nissan Qashqai, Mazda CX-5, Hyundai ix35 and VW Tiguan. In Europe, it is available with a number of different powertrains. These range from a 1.0-liter three-cylinder with 113 hp through to a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel delivering 187 hp in range-topping guise.
