Next-Gen Mercedes-AMG A45 Spied, Will Bring Over 400 Horses

The next-generation Mercedes-AMG A45 has been spied testing for the very first time and to say it has a lot to live up to would be an understatement.

The outgoing A45 pushed the hot hatch industry to places it’d never been before and while the prototype pictured retains largely the same shape, modifications to the car will be extensive.

For starters, the new A-Class and A45 will use a revised version of Mercedes’ MFA platform, developed in partnership with Renault. Additionally, the updated car will receive styling inspired by the Concept A Sedan, particularly with the sharper and narrow headlights visible on this prototype.

Like the current car, power for the 2018 or 2019 model year A45 will come from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. However, grunt should reach new heights and a touch over 400 hp seems inevitable.

A global premiere should happen early or mid-next year.

    over 400hp from 2 liters, 4 cylinders… with a warranty.. wowza

Awesome! Now make it for under $50k otherwise who cares about this car…

that’s silly, plenty of people spend 90 on a 4cyl porsche. No just dont raise the price signifigantly

      • SteersUright

Right, because this car is truly in the same league as a fully loaded Porsche Cayman S. Re-read, rethink, then re-read again before hitting the “post” button.

Uhm, the current hyper-hatches are quicker than a Cayman S while being cheaper. So, there’s that… Certainly the Cayman is nicer to drive but the A45 is more practical. The Merc is an expensive car objectively but you do get what you pay for.

You Americans are crying about the sub-par European cars that you receive, but you are not willing to pay the full price for the decent ones. Just look at the difference between the US and EU Passat and Mexican made Jetta and German made Golf. HUGE difference.

Crying? Don’t think so. I could say you Europeans never stop crying about how much more your gas costs and how much more your cars cost.
I personally do wish a few Euro models made it over, but I dont lose any sleep over it. This A45 may make a ton of sense as a $75k car in Europe, but in the states it will be a VERY hard sell. In fact, I think thats why it never came here and still won’t. We’ll likely get some CLA version of it as a sexy sport sedan, and I do think that it would sell better as such stateside. That said, at $50k-ish, its a reasonable proposition and has reasonable competition. At $75k, we have too many other great options here because, as you already know, our cars are way cheaper. 🙂

I do like the current A-Class, but I’d rather have an A180 with an AMG body kit. That would be fast enough for my needs! :p

While you’re right with regards to power, its the handling modifications that provide so much of the fun. And you dont get those on an A180, even with an AMG kit.

Think it will keep up with the RS3 this time? Hope so.
