2019 Audi A1 Configurator Launched, Base Model Is Typically Sparse

For a supermini, the new generation Audi A1 is surprisingly expensive, as revealed by the online configurator for the German market, available here, yet it’s also a bit sparse in base grade.

The price of the 2019 A1 starts at €21,150 ($24,487) in Germany. The entry-level model will play your favorite tunes, though you can only see the readings and settings on the standard digital instrument cluster and control it only via the multi functional steering wheel buttons.

The most affordable Audi A1 comes with air conditioning, electric windows and central locking, but no alloy rims, it has steel wheels – luckily with hub caps.

Customers will have to pay almost €1,000 ($1,158) for the LED headlights if they don’t favor the looks of the car without them, and for a good reason, as the base units make the A1 look really cheap.

In addition to the base model, Audi is offering the new A1 in three trim levels called Advanced, S Line and Edition 1. The A1 Advanced starts at €22,900 ($26,513), the S Line is available from €24,000 ($27,787), whereas the Edition 1 comes at a hefty €27,940 ($32,348).

Just as a point of reference, the Volkswagen Polo GTI starts from €23,950 ($27,729) in its home market.

Correction: We originally said that the base, German market Audi A1 doesn’t have a radio/CD and speakers. Well, it’s 2018 and not 1998, and as some of you rightly told us, the new A1 does indeed come with a standard MMI Radio operated via the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel. You won’t find it in typical space it occupies on the center console where there’s an annoying empty space, but it’s there, hiding in the – standard on all versions- digital instrument cluster. So, yes, that means speakers are included too.

      From first reviews it seem the material quality has been dialed back even on the press cars (top models), so definitely way more hard plastic than before….

    I don’t think this trim level would fly outside of Germany, and certainly not in the UK. People are used to paying a premium for an Audi, but £19,000 for a car that doesn’t even have a radio is beyond the pale.

    Audi knows there will be stupid fanboys who can’t afford paying premium to buy their cars but would buy one even if it doesn’t have wheels as long as there is an Audi badge on the front.
    Man, even Chinese replicas looks better and at least comes with an entertainment unit!

      There ar a lot of people buying these super base German premiums (often with gutless engines combined), and then getting fake S-Line/AMG/M-Line wheels of E-Bay. Important thing is they look “rich”, even if the interior makes a Dacia feel plush…

      Nowadays a screen is cheaper to produce than proper instruments, where you need to translate all the digital data the car produces into analogue showings; Think how much cheap tablets cost on amazon, and you have a picture.

    Does not look like the same car that has been shown in top spec trim until now. Amazing what tiny wheels do to a cars looks, making it bloated and dumpy. This cheapo looking version certainly doesn’t look premium but comes with a premium price tag. Audi are taking the p*ss!

    This might be the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard in weeks. DIGITAL instrument cluster but no radio?!?!?! Not condoning this behavior but it might be because they don’t really have any small/cheap ‘just pop in’ solutions anymore, they’re all the fancy high-tech touch-screen units.

    To me this car does not make sense. I get the point of an entry level Audi but if you do want an Audi surely you want to have at least the very basics of what we are all accustomed to by now.
    Buying this is nothing more than I’m a snob but a poor and dumb one.

    Sorry but the article is just wrong. Of course the base model has a radio! Just click through the configurator, the “MMI radio” is standard equipment and includes bluetooth connection for phones and media, voice commands, a 10,25 inch cluster and speed-depending volume adjustment.

    I think nobody buys those base models anyway. Unless it’s for rental car fleets: you can find plenty of A1 and A3 there. But don’t feel too short handed because even the most expensive versions will have hard plastics covering the whole doors. It’s how cheap Audi got. And those MSRP in the configurator are just funny since nobody pays retail for Audi.

    The article is wrong. Base-spec comes with MMI-Radio and a 10,x’ display (which looks like a hole in the articles fotos). Still, for a premium-priced car one would expect something less cheap looking. For about the same price you can get an almost fully equipped Ford Fiesta Vignale (ok, Ford lacks a comparable halo, but at that price it’s a way better choice) or likewise. I just wonder how that 4-ring-hubble-of-plastic is going to compete with its kind (Mini/A-Class)…

    They make it look deliberately bad in base spec to encourage buyers to spec it up and give Audi a few thousand more euros each times; they must be laughing all the way to the bank.
    Annoyingly though I would want one of these over a Polo or Fabia, I guess the SEAT Ibiza is the best compromise of the four siblings.

    Is it only me or I always thought that “PREMIUM” brand models need to be premium even in the base spec compared to the lower end brands models. Honestly this looks as cheap as tata nano. If I was a CEO I would make the starting price of about 30000 and for that money add some features like radio led lamps better plastic and wheels and etc. But before it fire product manager.
