Bentley is calling back certain Mulsanne luxury sedans in the United States to have their rear seatbelt anchors reinforced.

The NHTSA’s notice reveals that 1,059 cars are affected, all of them in the five-seat configuration and put together between January 2012 and September 2018. The recall includes both the regular Mulsanne and the Mulsanne Speed.

In these cars, the rear seatbelt buckle might become detached from the body structure in the event of an accident, thus increasing the risk of injury or worse, depending on the severity of the impact. The automaker states that this could happen if the center seating position is occupied at the same time as an outer seat.

The issue is caused by the mounting points of the seatbelt buckles. These parts were, according to Bentley, manufactured “using an incorrect grade of material by the supplier”.

Owners have started being informed of the safety campaign since early February. In the meantime, the carmaker has also instructed dealers to improve the strength of the rear seatbelt mounting by adding an additional reinforcement panel to the body structure.

Bentley has started repairing the cars at the beginning of March, naturally free of charge. Those who haven’t been contacted yet should get in touch with the Bentley’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-777-6923 or the NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
