Whenever McLaren releases a new model, renderings quickly flood the internet showing the vehicle as a convertible and, most of the time, these renderings prove to be quite accurate. With this McLaren GT Spider rendering, though, things are a little different.

The first thing to point out about the GT Spider from X-Tomi Design is quite predictable, in that it has a similar removable roof design to other McLaren convertibles, such as the 720S Spider. This means the car wouldn’t look drastically different from the coupe and thanks to the use of a removable hardtop, would likely be almost as comfortable as well.

However, this is in all likelihood merely a “what if?”, since we don’t expect McLaren to offer a Spider version of the new GT.

While it’s typical for supercar manufacturers to follow up their new coupes with convertibles, the GT is quite unlikely to follow suit. McLaren is promoting the car as a grand tourer, not a supercar, and spent considerable money and resources on developing a mid-engine car that offers superb luggage capacity. In fact, the GT can accommodate a total of 20.1 cubic-feet (570 liters) of stuff thanks to a large luggage area below the tailgate and a luggage compartment at the front.

Creating a McLaren GT Spider would certainly be possible thanks to the strength of the car’s carbon fiber MonoCell II-T monocoque, but a folding roof would take up valuable space at the rear, meaning the car would likely be only a little more practical than the 720S.

Of course, since there is no word whatsoever from Woking, we can merely speculate on that and we might be proven wrong in the future. Which we wouldn’t mind, really, as we’re sure an open-top GT would still be a blast.
