Tuning the engine isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when looking at the new Scala. However, this is exactly what DTE-Systems has done, refining its plug&play PowerControl Xtuning box for the three petrol engines and one diesel unit available for Skoda’s compact hatchback.

The 1.0-liter TSI, which kicks out 95 PS (94 hp / 70 kW) and 175 Nm (129 lb-ft) of torque, has received an extra 23 PS (23 hp / 17 kW) and 35 Nm (26 lb-ft) of torque. The 115 PS (113 hp / 85 kW) and 200 Nm (148 lb-ft) variant of the same mill benefits from an increase of 22 PS (22 hp / 16 kW) and 35 Nm (26 lb-ft) of torque.

Moreover, 29 PS (29 hp / 21 kW) and 58 Nm (43 lb-ft) of torque have been squeezed from the 1.5-liter TSI, which develops 150 PS (148 hp / 110 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) from the factory, and the 1.6-liter TDI diesel has gained 19 PS (19 hp / 14 kW) and 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) of torque on top of the standard 115 PS (113 hp / 85 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft).

The tuning box offers three modes: Sport, Dynamic and Efficiency. These can be selected using the plus and minus buttons, or controlled via a smartphone app. Moreover, the Scala 1.5 TSI’s 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) of 8.2 seconds is said to have been improved by up to 10 percent by the PedalBox, which also enhances the throttle response.

While certain tuning companies have already started releasing upgrades for the Scala, Skoda is still undecided when it comes to a potential RS (vRS in the UK) variant. Such a model could be on the agenda, according to reports, and might use an electrified powertrain. Skoda has already previewed such a car with the 2018 Vision RS Concept, a PHEV with a total system output of 245 PS (242 hp / 180 kW).
