What If, After IndyCar, McLaren Decided To Race In NASCAR As Well?

McLaren has already announced its return to full-time IndyCar racing beginning with next year, in partnership with both Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and Chevrolet.

Speaking of the latter, since McLaren will field two Chevy-powered cars in IndyCar, here’s an interesting thought: what if it did the same with the most popular kind of motorsports in the States?

We’re talking NASCAR, of course, and even though it’s not going to happen, that doesn’t stop renders such as this one from popping up.

The car you’re looking at was drawn up by Lewis Bloomfield and as you can see, is wearing all the right colors. As a matter of fact, despite McLaren being a staple of Formula 1 it’s the U.S. that made it adopt its current paint scheme since, in 2017, it was fans who insisted they paint their F1 cars similarly to what they were doing in IndyCar.

“We are starting to look at car designs now,” said McLaren’s Zak Brown before the actual launch of the Renault-powered MCL33 F1 car. “I think the fans want us to go to Papaya Orange for sure. When we did the IndyCar we had an overwhelming amount of ‘Please make your F1 car like that’.”

The full Papaya Orange and Blue color scheme was actually introduced some 50 years ago by Bruce McLaren himself, so it is rooted in the outfit’s racing heritage. But what about the concept itself – would a McLaren-backed NASCAR entry make any sense or would it be a step too far?

Why would they enter NASCAR? Doesn’t seem to be their demographic, nor is there technology that transfers to their F1 or Indycar programs.
A more likely scenario is entering a two car team in the premier IMSA races, Rolex 24 and Sebring.

    • Smith

Nothing to do with technology, McLaren doesn’t make a car that has mass market appeal and they currently sell premium product, a word that NASCAR fans can’t even spell.

  • Quinten

McLaren is already in NASCAR… they supply all of the teams with digital gauge clusters and other electronics. But there’s no way that McLaren can have a NASCAR team by itself. To make financial sense, they would need to run at least two cars and work with an existing Chevy team, either Hendrick or RCR, for engineering and development. They could takeover Germain Racing and their 13 car, which used RCR equipment. I just don’t see how McLaren would benefit from being in NASCAR.

“Make financial sense” and McLaren under Zak Brown doesn’t go together, or else they would be entering IndyCar, a series that has been dying for decades. NASCAR would actually make much more financial sense, their audience (even though it has declined) is still larger way larger than IndyCar’s, and also way larger than F1’s in the US.

  • Smith

What if … This would signal the end of McLaren as a credible motorsports company and would be the death of the brand. They have had a few bad years but they have not sunk so low as to give up on life totally.

  • SD38439

Might as well go for it. McLaren has been destroyed by Brown the Clown, has little or nothing to do with the McLaren that Ron Dennis built from nearly nothing. And NASCAR is more relevant than IndyCar and has better racing than modern F1 anyway.
