Williams Advanced Engineering is showcasing its innovative battery pack with Adaptive Multi-Chem technology at Cenex LCV2019, built using knowledge gained while acting as the sole battery supplier to Formula E, among other things.

In a nutshell, Adaptive Multi-Chem technology enables reduced mass and volume, meaning increased energy and power density for multiple applications (motorsport, hypercar, electrified flight).

By using a state of the art bi-directional DC/DC converter, Adaptive Multi-Chem can help deliver high energy and high power density in a single pack – approximately a 37% increase in energy density for a target power density.

The system is also highly adaptable, where scalable blocks allow for the semi-independent sizing of energy and power cells, while a compact thermal management system provides the all the cooling you need without adding any unnecessary bulk.

The company’s stand at Cenex will feature a battery module with Adaptive Multi-Chem technology, with a total stored energy of 60 kWh. Peak deployment power is rated at 550 kW (748 PS for 20 sec), the same as the peak regeneration power (for 10 sec).

A revolutionary composite manufacturing process will also be on display, dubbed 223. This unique production process is said to feature an engineered hinge embedded within a single composite preform of carbon fiber reinforced polymer, thus enabling for the creation of 3D structures from 2D materials.

“We are developing and delivering technologies that will shape the future of low-carbon vehicles,” said Williams Advanced Engineering technical director, Paul McNamara. “We are working to accelerate electrification in the industry and are very excited to share our progress at Cenex LCV2019. Our vast experience in battery technology – which has included acting as the sole battery supplier in FIA Formula E, not to mention undertaking many electric vehicle programmes – alongside lightweighting and composites from F1 provides us with unparalleled expertise.”
