The order books for the all-electric Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 AWD have just been opened in select markets. Which markets are those, you ask? Well, they didn’t say.

But Volvo did communicate that tens of thousands of consumers have expressed their interest in the electric SUV while several thousand people have committed to firm orders before sales even formally began. Production of the electric XC40 Recharge will kick off later this year with customer deliveries starting soon after.

“It is clear that customers like what they see in our Recharge car line,” head of EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) and global commercial operations Björn Annwall said. “Our Recharge cars are everything customers expect from a Volvo, with the addition of a state-of-the-art fully electric or plug-in hybrid powertrain.”

The Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 AWD is the company’s first fully-electric model and uses a pair of electric motors to deliver a combined 402 hp. Providing these motors with juice is a 78 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that offers 249 miles (400 km) of range on the WLTP cycle and the ability to charge up to 80 per cent in 40 minutes through 150 kW fast-charging.

It’s not just the powertrain that promises to make the XC40 Recharge P8 AWD a serious Tesla rival. The SUV also features an all-new infotainment system running on Google’s Android OS that has been integrated with Volvo’s On Call digital connected services function.

Volvo has not specified which markets will be the first to receive the electric SUV but it will likely be a handful of European nations. Prices haven’t been confirmed either.
