Tesla has started to wrap cars in China, seemingly as a solution to its limited range of paint options.

The official Tesla customer service account on Weibo made the announcement yesterday and showcased a Model X with a bright yellow wrap. Tesla says its wrapping service will initially be available in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Suzhou, before being introduced to other cities in the middle of this month.

It is unclear just how many color options Tesla will offer but we know the aftermarket industry has an almost endless array of wraps available. It seems most likely that Tesla will stick to solid colors but it would be interesting if it started offering some wild multi-colored wraps or wraps with interesting patterns.

No pricing details are available but wraps usually cost several thousands of dollars and are much cheaper than a respray.

While it is interesting to see Tesla giving its Chinese customers the option of really making their cars stand out, it does come across as a bit of a half-hearted attempt to appease owners. Tesla offers very few exterior colors for its models, especially when compared to the premium automakers that it competes against. Tesla has further reduced its color palette in recent years to streamline production and make repairs easier. In simpler terms; to reduce costs.

This has culminated with the Tesla Cybertruck, a vehicle that won’t even have paint when it leaves the factory. In April, Elon Musk took to Twitter to state that Cybertruck customers will have the ability to wrap their vehicles in “any color or pattern,” but it was unclear if that meant Tesla itself would do the wrapping or if customers would have to. With the launch of a wrapping service in China, it now seems possible that Tesla could introduce a similar service in North America to ensure not all Cybertruck’s look identical.
