Workplace comedies are nothing new, but the latest will explore the automotive industry.

Dubbed American Auto, the NBC series will be “set at the headquarters of a major American automotive company in Detroit where a floundering group of executives try to rediscover the company identity amidst a rapidly changing industry.”

That isn’t much to go on, but the show has been picked up for the 2021-2022 season and features Superstore alum Justin Spitzer, who will be serving as writer and executive producer.

Little is known about American Auto at this point, but it will star Ana Gasteyer who has previously been seen on Saturday Night Live and Suburgatory. She’ll be joined by Superstore actor Jon Barinholtz as well as Harriet Dyer, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White and X Mayo.

The series will reportedly focus on employees of Payne Motors and the company appears to be inspired, at least in part, by General Motors. That remains to be seen, but it makes sense as GM is the only automaker led by a woman and the only one with their headquarters in Detroit. This seems like an odd choice as a comedy inspired by the antics of Tesla CEO Elon Musk almost writes itself.

Regardless, NBC Universal’s President of Scripted Content, Lisa Katz, said “Our driving force has always been to seek out talented storytellers who have a strong point of view.” She added American Auto will have a “unique voice, excellent world building and compelling storytelling.”
