Vehicle reservation programs are nothing new, but they have exploded in popularity in the past few years.

That can probably be chalked up to Tesla, which can rack up hundreds of thousands of reservations for vehicles years before they’re launched.

Automakers seem to have taken notice as many new vehicles now have a reservation program of their own. A few well-known examples are the Ford Bronco and GMC Hummer EV.

While it’s not surprising to see those highly-anticipated models go up for reservation, the treatment has now been extended to relatively common crossovers. In particular, Hyundai has announced their first-ever reservation program and it’s for the 2022 Tucson of all things.

Not to knock Hyundai or the Tucson, but really? It’s a mainstream crossover that starts at $24,950 and features a bold design as well as some eco-friendly powertrains. That makes the Tucson interesting, but not exactly something consumers can’t wait to get their hands on.

That being said, Hyundai Motor America described the Tucson as “highly-anticipated” and Chief Marketing Officer Angela Zepeda noted the “reservation program allows our most excited customers to reserve their Tucson today.”

Hyundai is far from alone in this reservation push as consumers can also reserve the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV, the Volvo C40 Recharge and virtually everything from an EV startup. The ultimate goal is to turn early excitement for a vehicle into a reservation and then into an actual sale.

Getting back to the Tucson reservations, ‘fans’ can visit Hyundai’s website, configure their vehicle and then select their preferred dealer. After securing their spot in line for $100, customers have until June 30th to complete the transaction or their deposit will be automatically be refunded.
