The Mercedes GLE is reaching middle age and that means the company has begun working on a facelifted variant.

Recently caught undergoing testing, the updated model has a revised grille that resides between restyled headlights. Further below, we can see a new front bumper with sportier intakes that feature a horizontal bar.

Additional changes are limited, but the taillights are camouflaged and appear to have updated graphics. That being said, their overall shape looks pretty familiar.

Spy photographers only got a glimpse inside the cabin, but we can see the crossover will be equipped with a new steering wheel that resembles the one found in the facelifted CLS as well as the new S-Class. The rest of the interior was heavily disguised, so additional changes are possible. However, it’s too early to tell if the GLE will adopt a tablet-like infotainment system like some of the company’s newer models.

Engine options remain a mystery, but the crossover could be equipped with new and updated powertrains. That remains unconfirmed, but the current model offers an assortment of different engines including a 255 hp (190 kW / 259 PS) turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a 362 hp (270 kW / 367 PS) turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with EQ Boost technology. Customers can also opt for a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that has outputs ranging from 483 hp (360 kW / 490 PS) to 603 hp (450 kW / 611 PS).

There’s no word on when the facelifted GLE will be introduced, but it could potentially debut next year.
