The March 86C that was driven to victory at the Indy 500 in 1986 by Bobby Rahal is heading to auction in mid-August.

It’s not very often that an open-wheeled race car with the pedigree of this 86C comes up for auction and we have no doubt that collectors will be clamoring to get their hands on it. The car will be sold by Gooding & Company and is expected to sell for between $1.5 million and $2 million.

The March 86C came to life thanks to March Engineering and the Truesports racing team. It was the brainchild of legendary Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey and built to comply with new CART regulations that were introduced in 1986. The new rules necessitated the use of a honeycomb tub, smaller diffusers, and the inclusion of side pods to improve driver safety.

The car was an immediate success. Not only did Rahal race this particular example to victory at the Indy 500, but nine of the top 10 positions were secured by March 86Cs. After Indy, Rahal went on to secure five other race victories and ultimately clinch the 1986 CART Championship.

Gooding & Company notes that the car was purchased by the consignor in 1990 directly from the Truesports racing team and features a bright red Budweiser livery. Moreover, it is being sold with the same Cosworth DFX turbocharged V8 engine used in its Indy 500 win.
