The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is the subject of two recalls due to inadequate bonding of the windshield and panoramic sunroof. The defects affect 17,692 vehicles whose windshields may not be well enough affixed to comply with regulations and 13,544 whose glass roof panels have the same issue.

The problem seems to be that the urethane bonding agent is not adhering well enough. That could lead to water leaks or other issues, but more alarmingly, the windshield could detach which, in the case of an accident, will increase the risk of a injury.

Fortunately, Ford appears to have caught the defect before any injuries were reported. Its investigation into both issues started in June and was precipitated by a cracked windshield replacement in which improper urethane adhesion was reported.

By August, Ford was analyzing the results of cut-out inspections to determine the likelihood of seeing the issue in the field. Now, the automaker says it’s not confident that the population listed will meet federal regulations and it’s aware of three other incidents that could be related to the adhesion issue.

This isn’t the first time a Ford vehicle has been recalled for this issue. In February, another was issued for the 2021 Ford F-150, whose windshield suffered a similar adhesion issue.

Dealers will remove and reinstall the windshields of affected vehicles. As for the glass roof, the automaker will clean the area around the glass and add more adhesive where necessary. All work will be done free of charge and any customers who have already had to replace their windshield or roof glass panel would have had the costs covered under warranty, so no reimbursements will be necessary.

Owners of affected vehicles should expect to receive a letter as of October 27. They may also contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, citing the 21C22 code for the windshield recall and 21S42 for the panoramic roof one.
