This past week, a 964 Porsche 911 sold for $439,099 at auction on Collecting Cars, but it wasn’t just any 964, rather it was a rare 911 Turbo 3.6 “X88” with quite the history to boot.

The 1994 911 Turbo 3.6, a rare car to begin with, was originally commissioned for the infamous Sultan of Brunei, and was equipped with the output-boosting “X88” package. It was also of course owned by 2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button, and if all of that wasn’t enough, it boasts a mere 19,283 miles (31,033 km) on the clock.

The exterior is finished in Horizon Blue Metallic, and this particular car holds the title of being the only X88-equipped 964 911 to be painted in this shade. It’s also one of only a handful of X88’s fitted with the standard front end. Other exterior touches include 18-inch silver split-rim Speedline wheels, red brake calipers, quad exhaust pipes, and the iconic “whale tail” spoiler. The bodywork overall is in very good condition, but not perfect, with a few minor rock chips dotting the paintwork in various spots around the vehicle.

Moving inside, the cabin is upholstered in Marine Blue leather throughout. It also includes power-adjustable comfort seats and a Marine Blue leather-trimmed airbag cover, as well as an electric sliding sunroof, air conditioning, headlight leveling system, a top-tinted windscreen, a rear windscreen wiper, and an onboard computer. Like the exterior, the interior is indicative of this car’s excellent preservation, and as such, there’s only minor creasing in the seats, and all interior trim is in flawless condition.

Under the hood is this car’s coveted 3.6-liter turbocharged flat-six, which as mentioned before, is equipped with the X88 package. That boosted the car’s output to 380 hp (385 PS / 283 kW) and 384 lb-ft (520 Nm) of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels by way of a five-speed manual transmission. While it might not sound like much, that’s actually the same amount of horsepower as a brand new 911 Carrera and nearly as much torque as a Carrera S.
