Hertz recently made waves by announcing plans to acquire 100,000 Teslas and now the company has teamed up with Uber to offer 50,000 Teslas to their drivers by 2023.

While most Uber drivers own their own vehicle, the company’s senior vice president of Mobility and Business Operations noted that many do not. As a result, they’re partnering with Hertz to offer Teslas to their drivers in the “largest expansion of electric vehicles on a mobility platform in North America.”

The first Teslas will become available to Uber drivers on November 1st and they’ll initially be offered in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Washington, DC. A nationwide expansion is slated to occur in the following weeks and the company said riders will “start seeing Teslas more frequently throughout the holidays.”

Unfortunately, the Teslas won’t come cheap as drivers are being asked to shell out $334 (£243 / €287) per week. Uber says it’s the “best deal available in the market today for drivers looking to rent a Tesla” and added the price also includes insurance and maintenance. The ride-hailing service went onto say they expect the price to dip to $299 (£217 / €257) or less per week as the program gets underway.

However, the company isn’t going to be handing cars over to everyone with the means to rent one. Instead, during the initial launch, the models will be reserved for drivers who have completed at least 150 trips and have at least a 4.7-star rating.

While the Teslas are certainly on the pricey side, Uber stated drivers will save gas and potentially earn more money thanks to their Green Future Program that provides an extra $1 (£0.73 / €0.86) per trip for using an EV.
