Mercedes has been slowly expanding the redesigned C-Class lineup as the All Terrain variant was introduced this fall.

The next member of the family will be the mild AMG version, which is slated to adopt either the C43 or C53 moniker. While the name remains a mystery, a prototype was recently spotted wearing less camouflage than ever before.

The sedan follows in the footsteps of the standard C-Class, but adopts a Panamericana grille and a sportier body kit that closely echoes the AMG Line package offered on lesser models. The latter includes sportier side skirts and a more aggressive front bumper.

Besides those components, the C43 / C53 has been equipped with stylish wheels that are backed up by ventilated front discs. The performance-oriented model also sports a rear diffuser, which is flanked by a four-tailpipe exhaust system.

Spy photographers got a glimpse of the cabin, but there isn’t much to see. However, we shouldn’t expect drastic changes as the biggest upgrades will likely be an AMG-branded steering wheel, sport seats, and special trim.

While the outgoing C43 was equipped with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine developing 385 hp (287 kW / 390 PS) and 384 lb-ft (520 Nm) of torque, the new model is expected to adopt a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Despite sounding like a step back, it could actually be an upgrade as Mercedes engineers have been able to make some truly impressive four-cylinders. In particular, the turbocharged engine in the A45 S develops 415 hp (310 kW / 421 PS) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque.

While the C43 / C53’s output remains unclear, the model is expected to be introduced early next year.
