Max Verstappen Wins The F1 World Championship On Last Lap

24-year old Max Verstappen has become the first-ever Dutch Formula 1 World Champion. He did so by overtaking Lewis Hamilton on the last lap of the final race of the year at Abu Dhabi. Hamilton, who had led the race from the end of lap one, looked set to win, with the pair equal on points coming into the race. However, a controversial decision to resume racing for one lap after a late safety car meant Verstappen, who had pitted for fresh soft tires, was faster, passing the Mercedes of Hamilton to deny the Briton an eighth title.

The Mercedes-AMG F1 may have secured their eighth consecutive constructor’s trophy, but losing out on the driver’s championship is sure to have hurt. The team soon protested the race results, claiming the manner in which the race was restarted was unfair and that Verstappen had momentarily passed Hamilton under the safety car. After deliberation, both were rejected by the stewards, but the German team has since lodged a notice of intention to appeal the decision.
