After winning his first Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship this past season with Red Bull Racing, Max Verstappen has extended his contract with the team for another six years. This deal, which will keep him at the team through 2028, marks one of the longest contract extensions in F1 history.

Verstappen has been with Red Bull Racing since 2016 after getting promoted from Toro Rosso, and has since achieved 20 wins and 60 podiums with them in addition to his championship, which was the team’s first since 2013. By 2028, he will have been with the team for 13 years and in F1 for 15 years.

With all Verstappen has accomplished, it’s easy to forget he’s only 24 years old, and he’ll only be 30 by the time his contract expires. For reference, Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, and Fernando Alonso, the other three championship-winning drivers on the grid, are currently 37, 34, and 40 respectively, and all look to keep racing for at least a few more years.

“I really enjoy being part of Red Bull Racing, so choosing to stay to the 2028 season was an easy decision.,” said Verstappen. “I love this team and last year was simply incredible. Our goal since we came together in 2016 was to win the championship and we have done that, so now it’s about keeping the number one on the car long-term.”

On his part, Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner said: “To have Max signed with Red Bull through to the end of ‘28 is a real statement of intent. Our immediate focus is on retaining Max’s world championship title, but this deal also shows he is part of the team’s long-term planning. With the Red Bull Powertrains division working towards the new engine regulations for 2026 we wanted to make sure we had the best driver on the grid secured for that car.”

This year, Verstappen will be piloting the RB18 alongside Sergio Perez to hopefully continue last season’s success, with the first race for 2022 taking place on March 20 in Bahrain.
