Ford will recall 78,376 Ford Edges made between August 14, 2020, and February 7, 2022, as a result of a glitchy backup camera feed.

The vehicles, sold for the 2021-2022 model years, are experiencing software issues related to the SYNC 4 infotainment system. The software utilizes a low-power mode to allow the infotainment to boot up faster but when the system attempts to exit it, the reset timers are not activated causing color information to be incorrectly decoded.

From the driver’s perspective, that leads to a rearview camera that can intermittently display a distorted, black and white, or discolored image. Lines can also appear across the screen and the feed may go blank intermittently. If the image is lost for more than 10 seconds, the screen may show a “Camera unavailable” message.

Naturally, that’s a problem since backup cameras are required by law and a missing image could increase the driver’s risk of running something over while reversing. Ford has received more than 400 warranty claims relating to this problem but it is not aware of any accidents or injuries relating to it.

Ford says that the recall population will be fixed with an over-the-air update. Owners, though, will be able to go into their local service center to have a dealer complete the software update if they prefer.

Ford expects to notify owners about the update starting on April 25. The over-the-air update, though, will start being deployed in March.
