Volvo has announced an improved Recharge T8 AWD plug-in hybrid powertrain is coming to the United States and will be available in the S60, V60, XC60, S90 and XC90.

Designed to offer improved performance, increased electric-only range and lower emissions, the revamped powertrain features a new long-range battery that sees the nominal energy capacity increase from 11.6 kWh to 18.8 kWh. Thanks to this change, the models now offer an EPA estimated electric-only range of 35-41 miles (56-66 km) when driven in Pure mode.

Besides the beefier battery pack, the powertrain features a more powerful rear electric motor that develops 143 hp (107 kW / 145 PS) which is an increase of 56 hp (42 kW / 57 PS). This means Recharge T8 AWD variants now produce a combined output of 455 hp (339 kW / 461 PS) and 523 lb-ft (708 Nm) of torque, making them the “most powerful Volvo cars ever produced.”

Speaking of performance, Volvo said the rear electric motor “enables better all-wheel drive capability which can prove particularly useful at low speeds, when towing, or when driving on slippery roads that demand extra traction and stability.” Furthermore, the turbocharged T8 petrol engine has been upgraded for “higher fuel efficiency and performance,” while the XC60 and S90 gain a one-pedal driving capability.

Volvo Car USA President and CEO Anders Gustafsson said, “For many customers, a plug-in hybrid is their first experience in driving electric. This upgrade will show so many the benefits of an electric future, and serve as a stepping stone on their own journey toward full electrification.” Volvo went onto describe their plug-in hybrids as “part-time electric cars” as research has shown they’re driven around half of the time in pure electric mode.
