The folks at Drako, builders of the super-low production GTE electric car, are promising an all-new model before the end of the year. The all-new Dragon will be the first SUV from the company and it comes with some very big promises. Not only is the five-passenger vehicle supposed to be super-luxurious, but Drako also claims that it’ll have 2,000 hp (1,491 kW), rocket from 0-60 (0-96 km/h) in just 1.9 seconds, and have a top speed in excess of 200 mph (322 km/h).

If true, upon launch it would be one of the most groundbreaking vehicles on the market and perhaps one of the most impressive considering that it would come from a very small company like Drako. Let’s break down some of the claims and how the EV builder says that they’ll achieve them.

First and foremost, that 2,000 hp number is a product of a quad-motor setup (one motor at each wheel) and a battery module that Drako builds in-house. The combination of those parts is what gives the Dragon its above-mentioned 0-60 sprint speed but also a claimed 9.0-second quarter-mile time. If true, that would bump the Tesla Model S Plaid down a rung on the leaderboard.

Drako also plans to make this gull-winged SUV a “world-beating luxury vehicle”. While no images of the cabin have been released, Drako says that “the cabin is wrapped in Europe’s finest leather, exuding luxury and comfort, with a unique layout and easy ingress/egress.” There’s no question that this is certainly a bold interpretation of what an electrified SUV can be.

Frankly, we’d love to see this thing come to market as could blow the doors off of the competition. Among all of the companies out there making wild promises, it’s very rare that we see one that actually keeps them.

Still, we’ll hold our breath as we do for other cars in this sort of aspirational segment with little history of actual production successes. The GTE is itself a very impressive vehicle but it’s a very low volume model and while we don’t know what numbers Drako have in mind for the Dragon, actually bringing it to production, especially with those specs, does seem like a tall order for a small company. In any case, we look forward to its full unveiling that’s scheduled for later this year.
