It’s not every day that a NASCAR driven by Jeff Gordon hits the used car market but at RM Sotheby’s upcoming Monterey auction, that’s exactly what’s going to happen.

This particular 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo built by Hendrick Motorsports was raced by Gordon during 2002, 2003, and 2004 seasons and built specifically as a superspeedway car. It competed at the Daytona International Speedway over three consecutive years, finishing in the top five in all three and coming home second at the 2003 event.

Driving the racer is a 358 cubic-inch naturally-aspirated V8 engine also built by Hendrick Motorsports and churning out 830 hp. This V8 runs alongside a race-spec four-speed transmission that transmits power to the rear wheels through a nine-inch rear housing assembly with a locking differential. Hendrick also built the suspension and braking components for the car.

The listing reveals that the was recently restored with a DuPont livery and will be sold with certificates of authenticity, extensive documentation, and a collection of photographers from its racing years.

Modern racers competing in NASCAR are known for their sparse interiors but the cabin of Gordon’s Monte Carlo is particularly simple. It features a basic three-spoke steering wheel, a rectangular dashboard and cluster housing a host of gauges (including a tachometer that is sideways…), and a bucket-style racing seat.

There’s no doubt that driving this thing, particularly on a racetrack, would be a phenomenal experience. However, we suspect that noise regulations at most circuits would prevent it from being used on private track days.
