In excess of 124,000 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Freightliner Sprinter models have been recalled in the United States due to a problem with the parking brake.

A recall notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has revealed that due to specific driver parking practices and the maximum speed up to which the parking lock function can be requested, there could be increased wear on the guide bushing of the park pawl. This means the parking pawl might not engage temporarily.

In the worst-case scenario, Mercedes-Benz says it cannot rule out the possibility that the vehicle might roll away from its parked position under certain circumstances, increasing the risk of injury.

The recall impacts 2019-2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter models and 2019-2022 Freightliner Sprinter models that were produced between March 2, 2018 and October 17, 2022. A total of 124,305 units are impacted.

To resolve the issue, Mercedes-Benz will update the software of various control units, including the ESP and transmission control unit, to reduce the threshold speed and recalibrate the PLS.

Dealers are set to be notified of the recall on or around December 12, 2022, while owners will be notified one week later.

This isn’t the only recall that Mercedes-Benz has had to deal with recently. In late September, GLE and GLS models were recalled in the United States because the fastening on the rear door window trim may not meet production specifications, meaning the rear window trim bar could separate from the vehicle while driving. More than 161,000 vehicles were involved in this recall.
