• The U.S. recall impacts select 2024 Boxster and Cayman models with a PDK transmission
  • Impacted vehicles were manufactured between July 6, 2023, and March 21, 2024
  • Porsche recalled 911 examples of the 2023 911 for a separate issue in February

Porsche has to replace the shift cable on several 2024 Boxster and Cayman models after discovering the cars could slip out of Park if the parking brake is not applied.

Last month, the German manufacturer was alerted to two cases outside the U.S. where Boxster/Cayman models rolled away despite being put in Park. While these accidents resulted in just bodywork damage and no injuries, it investigated both cases and discovered they had off-line rework performed outside of the normal assembly.

Porsche says these vehicles had damaged and/or the incorrect assembly of the shift cable and clip. It notes the cable sheath may have also been damaged during the re-work process.

A total of 14 Porsche Boxster and Cayman models are embroiled in the recall. These cars were manufactured between July 6, 2023, and March 21, 2024.

Porsche dealerships in the U.S. will be alerted to the recall on June 5 while owners will be informed by mail on June 12. Dealers have been instructed to replace the shift cable free of charge. The recall only impacts models equipped with Porsche’s PDK transmission, not those with a traditional stick shift.

Recalls involving Porsche models aren’t all that common but they do happen from time to time. In February, more than 900 examples of the 2023 911 were recalled because the seat belt automatic locking retraction could deactivate early, preventing the child restraint system from being properly secured. In this case, the problem was caused by an automated assembly check at a Porsche factory simply checking the presence of a spring blade used to engage the locking system rather than verifying the spring blade was in the correct position.
