• Shelby is teasing a mysterious new Mustang for Monterey Car Week later this month.
  • Massive swan-neck wing and wide fenders hint at serious track-focused performance.
  • It could mark the return of the GT500 name on the S650-generation Mustang platform.

Shelby American’s current Super Snake churns out a monstrous 830 hp and comes equipped with several brake, suspension, and aero upgrades. It’s perhaps the wildest Ford Mustang model on the planet, this side of a GTD. Not one to rest on its laurels, Shelby is already working on a new version of the Mustang, teasing it ahead of a premiere at this month’s Monterey Car Week.

Little is known about this new model. We can obviously tell it’s based on the current S650 Mustang, and this darkened image may have been captured on a racetrack, perhaps hinting at the car’s track-focused performance.

The wing stands out, as it features swan-neck uprights, is much larger than the wing of the standard Mustang Dark Horse, and even bigger than the one on Shelby’s Super Snake and GT350/GT350 R. While it stops short of the Mustang GTD’s crazed GT3-inspired unit, it should still help to stick the rear tires to the ground.

It’s also impossible not to notice the massive fenders of this car. They sit noticeably wider than any standard Mustang, other than the GTD, and housed within these fenders will no doubt be a set of custom wheels wrapped in thick, grippy tires.

What Will Power it?

Shelby Ford Mustang Super Snake

Powertrain details remain a mystery. Many commenters on Shelby American’s Facebook post are pleading not to simply add a 3.0-liter Whipple supercharger to the Coyote 5.0-liter V8, as it’s done with the Super Snake and GT350 models. Some are hopeful it could be a new GT500, perhaps fitted with a new and improved version of the 5.2-liter supercharged Predator V8 used by the old GT500.

Whatever the case may be, expect this latest Shelby model to be quick and very powerful. What the American firm has confirmed is that it will be available with a manual transmission, presumably alongside an upgraded version of the 10-speed auto also found across the Mustang lineup.
