• Toyota GR now reproduces 4A-GE engine parts for the classic AE86 series.
  • Cylinder head and block gain subtle internal upgrades for strength and precision.
  • Besides the RWD AE86 series, the new parts are compatible with FWD models.

Interest in preserving classic cars has been climbing, and Toyota is leaning into that momentum by expanding its GR Heritage Parts catalogue. Among the latest additions are freshly reproduced and lightly updated engine components for the popular AE86 series.

The new cylinder head and cylinder block sub-assemblies are designed for the 4A-GE 1.6-liter DOHC 16-valve engine, the beating heart of the Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno. Produced from 1983 to 1987, these twin icons have aged into cult classics, celebrated equally for their performance and cultural impact.

According to Toyota, the reproduced parts retain the basic design and specifications of the originals, but have been “modernized using the latest simulation technology, manufacturing methods, and materials”.

Refinements to the Cylinder Head

Starting with the cylinder head sub-assembly, it benefits from additional machining that lessens the untouched cast surface area, a new coating on the intake ports, and cam cap knock pins. Furthermore, certain intake and exhaust surfaces have gained thicker walls.

Moving on to the cylinder block sub-assembly, a new honing process is said to improve manufacturing precision. The use of higher-rigidity cast iron adds extra durability, as with a simulation-based modification on the crank-cap structure.

Finally, besides the RWD-only AE86 series, the cylinder block sub-assembly is compatible with FWD models like the Corolla FX-16 hot hatch, thanks to additional bosses and ribs that allow transverse mounting of the engine.

Toyota will showcase an AE86 build fitted with the reproduced parts at the “Initial D 30th Anniversary 2days” event that will be held at the Fuji Speedway in Japan on September 13 and 14. Visitors will be able to pre-order the new components on the spot.

Wider Heritage Collection

The new engine parts will be offered for sale starting in May 2026, with pricing set to be announced at a later date. You can find the rest of the GR Heritage Parts that are currently available for the AE86 Trueno and Levin on the official website.

The GR Heritage Parts collection currently comprises over 200 components for eight different models including various classic Land Cruisers (J40, J60, J70, and J80), the ultra-rare 2000GT, the AE86 series, as well as the A70 and A80 generations of the Supra.
