• Mattel expands Brick Shop with two new 1:32-scale Hondas.
  • Each Honda set includes around 250 buildable pieces.
  • Both cars feature decals and swappable wheel covers.

Are you a fan of interlocking bricks? Of course you are, and good news: because it’s never been better for us collectors. While Lego continues to churn out some impressive models, its dominance in plastic and rubber is no longer assured, with officially licensed sets from the likes of CaDA, and now Mattel, coming for a slice of the pie.

If you’re new to the Brick Shop range, Mattel introduced this new line of models last year, aimed squarely at snatching away some of those lucrative blocky buildable dollars from Lego.

The collection launched with three tiers of models. The Brick Shop Premium models are their most detailed and largest options, available in 1:12 scale, while the mid-range Elite series comes in 1:16. Finally, the entry-level Speed Series brings relatively affordable 1:32 scale cars to our hands.

The latest additions come from Brick Shop’s Speed Series, with detailed and buildable offerings of the 2007 Honda S2000 and the 1990 Honda Civic EF. The Civic features 248 pieces, with clear elements for the glass and headlights. Builders will also be able to use a custom decal sheet to add a bit of personality to their creations, while there are two sets of wheel cover designs as well.

The S2000 also features a decal sheet and swappable wheel covers, but ups the ante (a tad) with 257 pieces. Both models feature opening doors and, as an added bonus, will each come with a matching 1:64 scale model from Hot Wheels — an exclusive variation for those looking to collect all the castings.

Both the S2000 and the EF Civic are currently listed for sale online for $22.00 in the US, or £21.99 across the pond in the UK. Mattel’s Ted Wu said that, “Mattel Brick Shop continues to expand how adult fans and collectors interact with legendary vehicles.”

He added, “The Honda Civic EF and S2000 are true icons of Japanese performance culture, and through Hot Wheels and Mattel Brick Shop, builders can now celebrate these vehicles by recreating them with their own customisation to display on their shelves.”

So, are you looking forward to adding these two new Hondas to your collection, or are you waiting for something a bit more challenging to be released from the Brick Shop line?
