- De Tomaso has revealed the V12 for the upcoming P900.
- Developed by ItalTecnica, the engine produces 888 hp.
- An updated version of the car will be shown later this year.
De Tomaso has been largely out of the spotlight in recent months, but the company has quietly confirmed a new collaboration with ItalTecnica and revealed the engine that will power its upcoming P900 supercar.
Starting with the latter, the model will have a naturally aspirated 7.0-liter V12 that was developed by ItalTecnica and is “configured exclusively for track use.” It features a 65-degree V configuration as well as an eight-stage dry sump lubrication system and high-strength internals.

The hardware details are equally serious. There’s a solid billet aluminum crankcase, forged connecting rods, and ultra-lightweight pistons. The company went on to say the engine has two overhead camshafts per bank as well as four titanium valves per cylinder. Other highlights include a lightweight carbon fiber intake and a total weight of less than 441 lbs (200 kg).
All told, the engine produces 888 hp (662 kW / 900 PS) at approximately 9,500 rpm. That’s slightly below the 10,200 rpm redline. Power is sent exclusively to the rear axle through a sequential Xtrac gearbox.
A Long Time Coming
De Tomaso introduced the P900 in 2022 and it was originally slated to have a Capricorn-built V12 that weighed 485 lbs (220 kg) and revved to 12,300 rpm. The company acknowledged the changes by saying the “vehicle has unfolded against the backdrop of a rapidly changing automotive landscape.”

While many companies are embracing electrification, De Tomaso rejected this as the goal was to create a “powertrain with a true identity, one that prioritized response and amplified acoustics as much as measurable power output.” They added the engine is for those who “remember the era of Formula 1 V12’s defining Sundays, when noise was not a byproduct, but the defining signature of a marque.”
De Tomaso didn’t say when the car will be launched, but confirmed there will be “visual and aerodynamic updates.” These will be revealed later this year, so hopefully those 18 P900 customers won’t have to wait much longer.
