- Lincoln recalls 1,189 Navigators over moving seats.
- Seat software glitch may trigger rearward movement.
- Dealers fix it with a quick 20 minute software update.
Lincoln markets the fifth-generation Navigator as something of a sanctuary on wheels, but some 2026 models might try to give drivers a little too much personal space by sliding the seat backwards while the SUV is on the move.
The issue affects 1,189 MY26 Navigators built between November 26 and December 16, 2025 at Ford’s Kentucky plant. According to the official recall filing, a glitch in the seat’s obstacle detection logic can cause the driver’s seat to move rearward unexpectedly while the vehicle is traveling below 3 mph (5 kmh).
Phantom Obstacle
The seat system is designed with a safety feature that reverses direction if it detects something blocking its movement. That sounds sensible in theory, but in practice, the software can get confused. If the system thinks it has hit an obstacle and tries to reverse farther than the seat track actually allows, it can keep attempting to move backward repeatedly.

That means the seat could start sliding rearward while the vehicle slows down during normal driving. Imagine approaching a stop sign and suddenly feeling your driving position drifting toward the second row, and your right foot drifting further away from the brake pedal.
Ford’s investigation began in January after engineers looked into reports of what they called ‘seat bounce-back’ behavior. Eventually they confirmed the problem involved the Driver Seat Module software and approved a recall action in late February. Thankfully, the company says it knows of no crashes, injuries, or fires related to the issue.
Software Remedy
The fix is mercifully simple. Dealers will update the seat module configuration using Ford’s diagnostic system, which removes the problematic automatic reversal logic. The repair takes about 20 minutes, doesn’t require replacing any hardware, and could be handled by a Lincoln mobile tech visiting you to save you trekking to a dealer.
The Navigator was all-new for MY25 and gets a 24-way power-adjustable driver’s seat in Reserve trim. Step up to the Black Label and you upgrade to 30-way adjustment including movable thigh supports.
