• Zagato, La Squadra, and Deus Ex Machina built a one-off AGTZ Twin Tail.
  • The custom car features a dramatic black-and-white livery and a unique interior.
  • It aims to show how modern coachbuilding is becoming rolling automotive art.

In case anyone needed proof that the wealthy among us really do live an entirely different existence, this one-off AGTZ Twin Tail should do the job. Built as a collaboration between Zagato, La Squadra, and Deus Ex Machina, the car is a tribute to the Alpine A220 endurance racer, and it includes that vehicle’s signature feature. The rear end can come off, which changes the look of the whole car.

Based on the Alpine A110, the AGTZ Twin Tail was originally a product of work between La Squadra and Zagato. The removable rear end allows the car to swap between a longtail look and a more conventional rear bumper. Only 19 AGTZ Twin Tail models will be built worldwide, but this particular car is the only one to receive the Deus Ex Machina treatment.

For this version, Deus Ex Machina Creative Director Carby Tuckwell worked with La Squadra and Zagato to create a striking monochrome exterior. The body is finished in black and white with oversized graphics, an enormous circled “X” on the doors, contrasting wheels, and subtle red and blue accents near the roofline. The whole thing looks less like a traditional supercar and more like a racecar that accidentally wandered into an art gallery.

There’s also an interesting logic behind the collaboration. La Squadra founder Jakub Pietrzak says the companies wanted to connect surf culture and coachbuilding because both industries were transformed by fiberglass and later carbon fiber. Those materials allowed designers to create shapes and proportions that would have been impossible decades earlier.

That all said, the reality here is that this car is more about art than it is about performance. If there are any performance upgrades, none of these brands thought to mention it in their press materials. At least the A110 is already known for being a joy to drive. This new one-off creation just provides one owner with a truly bespoke version.
