• The 2026 Q3’s sunroof closing function fails to meet federal safety standards.
  • A software error in the sunroof control unit is behind the compliance failure.
  • Audi found the fault in internal testing before any reported injuries occurred.

The 2026 Audi Q3 hasn’t been on the market long, and already, thousands of examples are being recalled in the United States and Canada. Perhaps the only upside for Audi is that the issue involves the sunroof, not a core mechanical fault that would make the Q3 unsafe to drive.

According to Audi, the target data container for the sunroof control unit has been programmed incorrectly, and as such, the sunroof’s closing function may not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

Audi hasn’t specified exactly how the sunroof fails to meet those standards, though it acknowledges the defect could increase the risk of occupant injury. The issue has been traced to an incorrect entry in the sliding roof control unit software.

A potential problem with the sunroof’s closing function was found during tests in early February, before it was submitted to Audi’s Product Safety Committee, which decided to issue the recall in late March. Audi says it’s not aware of any crashes, fires, injuries, or deaths associated with the non-compliant sunroof.

OTA Software Update Coming

A total of 6,077 examples of the 2026 Q3 are being recalled in the United States, all of which were manufactured between November 26, 2025, and March 20, 2026. The recall also impacts 1,336 examples in Canada.

Audi plans to notify owners of impacted Q3s from May 29. Dealerships have been instructed to install new target data container software in the sunroof control unit, and the owner’s manual will be updated to include a new description for how the sunroof functions with the corrected software.

The new Q3 only began landing at US dealerships in the first quarter and is currently sold in a single specification, known as the S Line Quattro. This model is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 255 hp and 22 lb-ft of torque, and starts at $43,700, excluding a $1,295 destination and delivery fee.
