• Mitsubishi has detailed the 2026 Outlander.
  • Features new 1.5-liter hybrid engine with 174 hp.
  • Only returns 26 mpg city and 31 mpg highway.

Last summer, Mitsubishi announced the 2026 Outlander would adopt an all-new hybrid powertrain. Details were limited, but the company noted it would replace the existing 2.5-liter four-cylinder that developed 181 hp (135 kW / 184 PS) and 181 lb-ft (245 Nm) of torque.

Fast forward to today and the automaker has confirmed the model has a “Mitsubishi-designed and developed” 1.5-liter turbo engine that is paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. It produces 174 hp (130 kW / 176 PS) and 206 lb-ft (279 Nm) of torque.

That sounds like a mixed bag and the fuel economy ratings are appalling for a hybrid. According to Mitsubishi, the model returns up to 26 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined. That’s barely more than the outgoing model, which had an EPA rating of up to 24 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined.

Despite the new powertrain, pricing has barely climbed. The entry-level Outlander ES jumps from $29,645 to $29,995, which is a minor increase of $350. However, the destination fee has climbed from $1,495 to $1,745, so you’re looking at an overall increase of $600.
