- Updated T7 Multivan and California gain bigger screen and fresh styling.
- Bigger digital gauge cluster and swivel seats are also part of the upgrade.
- Historic Caravelle name replaces Multivan in the UK, but not in Germany.
Volkswagen has rolled out a series of styling, tech, and functionality upgrades for its T7 Multivan and California. And in some countries, there’s even a new – but also old – name.
While the changes aren’t dramatic enough to mistake either T7 for an all-new vehicle, they’re definitely extensive enough to be noticed. The biggest visual updates are concentrated at the front, where larger LED headlights and a revised lighting signature are joined by a cleaner bumper.

Volkswagen says the new headlights don’t just look better. They’re also brighter, offer a more uniform light pattern, and improve illumination both when driving straight ahead and when cornering. Higher-spec models feature an illuminated strip connecting the lights across the front fascia.
The cabin receives an even more comprehensive overhaul. A redesigned dashboard introduces improved materials, decorative stitching, and a larger 12.9-inch tablet-style infotainment display that now sits free-standing atop the dash. The Digital Cockpit has also been upgraded, giving drivers multiple display layouts and more customization options.
And like the electric ID. Buzz, the T7’s automatic transmission is now controlled via a steering column-mounted selector, helping free up space in the center console. Wireless smartphone charging is standard, charging power has increased significantly, and USB-C ports now deliver up to 60 W. Even the cupholders get ambient illumination.
Automatic Lane Changes
Volkswagen has also expanded the list of driver assistance tech. The latest Travel Assist system can now recognize traffic lights and perform assisted lane changes on highways. Powertrain choices, though, are carried over. The range starts with 148 hp (150 PS) diesel and 201 hp (204 PS) petrol engines, while the flagship eHybrid 4MOTION combines all-wheel drive with a 242 hp (245 PS) 2.0-liter petrol engine and a 19.7 kWh battery pack.
Choose Your Length
Long- and short-wheelbase versions are available, but pick the outdoors-loving California camper, and you’re restricted to the long one. Both Multivan and California, however, can be ordered in a new range-topping “Generation” special edition trim, which comes in a new two-tone paint finish of Candy White and Sunset Red Metallic.
One interesting footnote concerns the name itself. In some markets, such as the UK, Volkswagen is also reviving the historic Caravelle badge, bringing back a name that’s been associated with passenger-focused VW buses for decades. Ever-sensible Germany sticks with the functional Multivan name.
