- Ford is recalling more than 548,000 Expeditions over peeling chrome trim.
- The defect can create razor-sharp edges capable of cutting occupants.
- Automaker says it’s aware of 65 injuries and one crash tied to the issue.
Most recalls these days revolve around technology and software. A camera stops displaying an image, a battery monitoring system glitches, or an infotainment screen suddenly goes dark. Other recalls involve major mechanical components that keep a vehicle moving down the road. Ford’s latest recall is neither. Instead, it centers on a piece of interior trim that can become sharp enough to cut occupants.
The automaker is recalling 548,463 Expeditions from the 2018 through 2024 model years after discovering that chrome plating on the center console can bubble, peel, and separate from the underlying material. When that happens, the trim can develop sharp edges capable of causing injuries.

Ford first spotted the issue after noticing a pattern in customer complaints submitted to the NHTSA. Several owners reported peeling chrome trim on the center console, and five of the first six complaints reviewed by Ford alleged hand injuries caused by contact with the exposed sharp edges. The automaker could have found the same issues posted online, as we did.
One Reddit user flagged the issue some three years ago, posted photos of what they were dealing with, and drew several comments confirming that other owners had run into the same thing. “Peeling chrome trim is super handy for removing unwanted fingertips!” said one person. “I am a service manager at a Ford Dealership and we have to warranty those chrome pieces all the time,” said another.
Why The Recall Took A Second Look
The company initially determined that a recall wasn’t necessary because the bubbling and peeling are visible to occupants before the trim separates. However, a deeper investigation and additional testing led Ford to reconsider. Engineers found that components showing no obvious signs of trouble could still develop bubbling and peeling after environmental testing.

By June 2026, Ford had accumulated 4,634 warranty claims, 150 field reports, 34 customer call center reports, and six NHTSA complaints potentially related to the defect. More importantly, the automaker says it’s aware of 65 injuries and one crash linked to the condition globally. Some owners reported cuts severe enough to require professional medical attention.
Affected owners will be instructed to visit a Ford or Lincoln dealer, where technicians will inspect the center console and replace it if bubbling or peeling is present. The repair will be performed free of charge.
