Tesla To Produce Solar Panels At Gigafactory With Panasonic

Tesla has joined forces with Panasonic with the intention of manufacturing solar panels at SolarCity’s ‘gigafactory‘.

In a blog post, Tesla said that the deal is contingent on company shareholders approving the firm’s proposed $2.6 billion acquisition of SolarCity. If the thumbs up is given for this deal, Tesla and Panasonic will start churning out solar cells and modules in 2017.

A statement from Tesla reveals that the cells and modules manufactured at SolarCity’s factory in Buffalo, New York will “work seamlessly with Powerwall and Powerpack” and offer consumers an innovative power solution.

Tesla is already working with Panasonic on its own gigafactory where the Japanese electronics company is investing upwards of $3.86 billion.

According to chief technical and co-founder of Tesla, JM Straubel, “We are excited to expand our partnership with Panasonic as we move towards a combined Tesla and SolarCity. By working together on solar, we will be able to accelerate production of high-efficiency, extremely reliable solar cells and modules at the best cost.”
