2014 Chevrolet SS Officially Unveiled, Gets 415HP 6.2-liter LS3 V8 [w/ Video]

|

It may not have the firepower to worry the latest crop of German über-sedans such as the Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG or the BMW M5 but, nevertheless, the 2014 Chevrolet SS that was unveiled today at the Daytona International Speedway, where its racing version also debuted at the Daytona 500 NASCAR event, is a welcome addition to the Bow Tie’s range.

That’s because the new SS, which is the American version of the new Holden SS V and is built around GM’s global platform that also underpins the Camaro and Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle, marks Chevrolet’s return to rear-wheel drive performance sedans after a long absence.

It’s a fact readily acknowledged by GM North America president Mark Reuss: “The Chevrolet brand was largely built on the strength of rear-drive performance sedans, yet it’s been 17 years since we offered one”, he said. “The all-new SS fills that void and fills it better than any other vehicle in the brand’s rich history.”

Predictably, the new Pontiac G8 SS is visually identical to the new Holden Commorode SS V that was revealed earlier three days ago; the only obvious changes, apart from the badges, are the paint scheme of the 19-inch alloys and the SS’s single, instead of twin, exhaust pipes placed at each end of the rear fender.

The suspension includes MacPherson struts up front and a trapezoidal multilink arrangement at the rear, the steering gets electronic power assistance (EPAS) and the forged 19-inch alloy wheels, which are wrapped in 245/40 and 275/35 front and rear tires respectively, house 335-mm Brembo discs with two-piece, four-piston calipers at the front.

The engine bay is home to a 6.2-liter V8 that puts out 415HP and 415 lb-ft (562 Nm) of torque. It drives the rear wheels via a standard six-speed automatic transmission for a 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) acceleration time of “about” 5.0 seconds. There's no mention of a manual gearbox option.

Chevrolet claims that the 2014 SS has a near 50/50 front/rear weight distribution and a low center of gravity that endow its first RWD sports sedan in two decades handle as a sports sedan should without being too harsh for everyday use.

“The perfect weight balance and lower center of gravity were a big part of that goal because they enabled the team to tune for a more comfortable highway ride without sacrificing handling or driver confidence while cornering at the limits”, said executive engineer of GM global programs David leone.

The 2014 Chevrolet SS will go on sale in the fourth quarter of the year, at prices that will be announced close to its launch date. Its standard equipment list includes items such as eight-way power adjustable front bucket seats, leather upholstery, a center-console mounted touch screen for the MyLink and navigation systems, a Bose nine-speaker audio system, a color head-up display (HUD) and push-button start. It also features a host of safety systems like Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Side Blind Zone Alert, a rear-vision camera with cross traffic alert and is the first Chevy to offer Automatic Parking Assist.

Not American style! And thats bad... fuck this crap..

Rick said... »February 16, 2013

I find it quite attractive! If Chev can bring it in at a more than competitive price then all the better.

I HATE the front! Especially the huge lower grill and the overly busy, overly styled foglamps. The rest of the car looks good. The interior is really nice! No new LT-1? That sucks. That means NO direct injection, NO variable valve timing and NO cylinder deactivation. Granted nobody buys these cars to save gas but it would be nice if they put some good tech in the engines to make them a bit more efficient.

Mark said... »February 16, 2013

So much propaganda for this?Don't get me wrong it's a nice car but not what i expect it.Hell instead of using the new LT1 they put it the "old" LS3

Chevy guy all your life.....going to buy a Charger in spite........sounds like you are a petulant adolesent. It's only a model of car, hope you survive this crisis.

First off, thank you Chevrolet for bringing this car over. It likely has the bean-counters in a tissy. I just wish you hadn't set this car up to fail right out the gate. This should have been the Impala replacement, not that XL-size Malibu you will be selling soon, that will compete with (and likely steal sales from) it's slightly smaller sibling with pricing pretty much the same. But wait! There's still time to fix this: Scrap plans to re-do the Malibu and just put it's badges on what you WERE going to call an Impala and put the Impala badges on this car, one worthy of the name. Then you've saved a few million, and can add in a couple other trim levels to this car so that it can truly be the 4-door Camaro (nope, it isn't a 4-door Vette marketing guys....) that enthusiasts with kids want to own. And take the money you saved and fix the front-clip styling a bit and put some LED tail-lights out back. I'm sure the bean-counters will cry foul, say that more money can be made in the way you have it now, but they are wrong. And even if they are right, in 4 years this car will disappear anyway when (irony) Holden kills it to build the replacement on the same platform as the LaCrosse anyway. Do it the right way guys... show us you have the savy to put out a cool premium car that is balls out in more ways than one.

SS is a model type NOT a model name! WTF??? And this ugly toyota camry lookin piece ain't worthy of the name plate!!! Been a chevy guy all my life but gonna buy the dodge charger AWD! Now thats a sport sedan! Disgusted!!!

Dave Cohen said... »February 16, 2013

The lights go out when you make your last payment.

psiqtas said... »February 16, 2013

The styling sucks - totally boring, Police chargers looks more sporty than that & the Pontiac G8 was much more design-balanced!
Who the hell put these fancy DRLs in the bumper - damn they look like inaccurate & cheap aftermarket things!
GM are You crazy? Is it in USA legal to drive with turned on headlight and fully operated daytime running lights, which are blinding oncoming drivers (see photo #3) - how do You think why Aussie Holdens don't have it that solution... SS drivers, be prepared for hi-beam flashers from others, because in this spec this car shouldn't be street approved!!!

Rasta_Farian said... »February 16, 2013

I understand the idea of a "sleeper" vehicle, but c'mon! They could sell this next to Ambien and ZzzQuil...

Garrett Spicer said... »February 16, 2013

So this is the new G8 GT, huh?

psiqtas said... »February 16, 2013

Do You wanted to say unfortunate mounted LED-DRLs? I think the fog-lamps looking standard, that means OK.

SgtBeavis said... »February 16, 2013

The styling is meh..
The engine is meh..
The interior is pretty nice..

I'm sure they'll sell every one they make but it seems like they kinda mailed it in. I'm really disappointed the engine. There are so many better options in GM's arsenal. This one is just average.

Sleep... Very bland. Ford Falcon's could have a life extension.

Anonymous said... »February 17, 2013

So gay beside the Charger...

psiqtas said... »February 17, 2013

I wouldn't even call it a "sleeper", it's more a mishap.

Joe said... »February 17, 2013

You guys are just pissed that it took the Aussies to redesign and build yet another American car.....

psiqtas said... »February 17, 2013

Imagine, it even looks worse than the mentioned last Pontiac...

Dave Cohen said... »February 17, 2013

Good thing you live in North America where nobody cares if you're gay. Glad you have come out of the closet. What do you think of the car?

wonderdallas said... »February 17, 2013

Congrats on coming out!

psiqtas said... »February 17, 2013

Nope, he means that this car looks totally boring for a performance-sedan. You just have more better looking domestics to choose out now - CTS-V, Charger SRT8, 300 SRT8 just for example. This SS is more a stopgap car, than real show & go, because any present Chevy sedan looks for some years quite the same boring way...

psiqtas said... »February 17, 2013

Look, maybe he just ain't have any time for wasting more life waiting for some stupid marketing reheated cars than real hot looking ones? Didn't GM learn that last GTO was a flop? Go on Cyberchris, at least try some Mopar...

Chevrolet has been quite successful going by its aggressive marketing in the past. It can be a winner, if Chevy can bring it in at a more than competitive price than its competitors.

That's right, and they should get back to work and do the job bought them for without lip or the whip comes out again. We own you.

The G8 was a solid car...

DadzBoyz said... »February 19, 2013

For a company trying to build a brand identity, they shure as hell missed the boat here. Let's see. This looks like nothing that Chevy offers.

Camaro - No, but a new nose could have, tailights could have.
Malibu - The ass does. The nose looks like an Avalon.
Cruze - No split grill
Equinox - No split grill
Traverse - No whatever grill that has now
Truck - Of course not, but even Dodge's shared the crosshare with the truck
Corvette - No, but coul dhave had similar tailights
Nope. Chevy cheaped out and showed 0% risk taken and got a fast, maybe good handling, boring looking car.

Tom Laquidara said... »February 19, 2013

Forgetting about the disappointing body and looking at the specs. Based on the anticipated price tag the SS has to be compared to the Charger R/T and not the SRT. The SRT would be close to $10K more. Being a Charger R/T owner I think the SS specs look pretty good. e.g.-Standard equipment include FORGED WHEELS, WIDER TIRES, BREMBO BRAKES, 45HP more and about 300 pounds lighter than the Charger R/T. Of course we won't know all the details until it starts selling.

Let's not get homophobic. The G word, C word and N word are highly inflammatory and offensive. I am a Human Rights Commissioner, BTW. I do appreciate views of autos but not the stereotyping of people. Thanks:)

Thomas Leo Obuck said... »February 19, 2013

I really like it! If GM really wants to impress here, they will offer what Chrysler does for its cars with MOPAR accessories, i.e., 300/300S/300C grille choices. The SS interior is most flattering of all. The RWD factor is key. V8 a must. AWD?

Thomas Leo Obuck said... »February 19, 2013

I heard that GM thought long and hard about the car's name. The General had decided to retire the SS trim level across the board before coming up with it as a moniker for this limited edition sedan. It will not be massed produced to the level of the likes of the Chevy Malibu or Impala and the Caprice Classic name (even Caprice nameplate) just didn't make sense. Monte Carlo was voted down, Chevelle was given a thumbs down and Laguna didn't fit its Aussie roots per Chevrolet insider buddies. Super Sport or SS is okay with me. It's far better than the name game going on at Cadillac and Ford's Lincoln luxury car division, eh?!

Trey Reid said... »February 26, 2013

I hope they make a zl1 edition and drop the sc 6.2 from the camaro.
