A new recall issued by Volkswagen centers around nearly 5,700 vehicles from the 2016 model year in the US to fix their child safety locks.

Normally, the safety lock keeps the rear doors from being opened from the inside. In some of the affected models, it is possible that the system will disengage because of external vibration, allowing children to unintentionally open the door and increasing the risk of serious injury if they were to fall from the vehicle.

Identified at the supplier’s end, Czech Republic-based Kiekert CSSRO, the problem affects the VW CC manufactured from January 12 to February 3, 2016, e-Golf made between November 25, 2015, and January 11, 2016, and the Golf R and Tiguan, built from November 25, 2015, to January 28, 2016.

Volkswagen has yet to provide an exact notification schedule, but once owners will be informed and an appointment will be scheduled with a local dealer, technicians will inspect and, if necessary, replace the child lock/locks, free of charge. For any questions on the topic, concerned owners of the above mentioned models can contact the manufacturer at 1-800-893-5298 or the NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
