Show any Porsche 911 to someone old enough to remember when Memorial Day was called Decoration Day, and chances are he or she will probably know the brand and model of the car. But ask someone to tell your which version they’re looking at and you’ll have a pretty hard time getting the right answer unless they’re a true Porschephile.

Take this 911 for example; even our experienced scoop photographers aren’t 100 percent sure about this 2012 Porsche 991 prototype that they bagged testing in Europe.

The chunky rear section with the blistered wheel arches and air-intakes along with the double wing at the back featuring a fixed lower part and a retractable upper section, leave few doubts that this is the new 911 Turbo.

A quick look at our previous spy shots of the 911 Turbo can confirm this.

But remember, this is Porsche we’re talking about: even a version of the 911 series like the Turbo is offered in…different versions as well as special editions.

Our man with the long lens noticed that this particular prototype featured a quad tail pipe layout instead of the two large single exhausts on either side of the bumper seen in the Turbo model previously.

This suggests that the car seen here is either the Turbo S model, which should benefit from a 30- to 50HP boost in output over the standard Turbo model, or that Porsche is trying out different exhaust systems.
