Along with airplanes, trains are considered among the best and safest means of transportation over long distances, but that in no way means that they are accident-free, as proved by Spain’s worst rail crash in decades that took place just outside the pilgrimage center of Santiago de Compostela on Wednesday night.

The horrifying derailment of the eight-passenger car Alvia express train that left at least 80 people dead and scores more injured, was captured by a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera.

Sadly, a spokeswoman for the Galicia regional high court, who wished to remain anonymous, told Bloomberg News that the number of casualties is expected to increase “because parts of the wreckage are difficult to access”.
