BMW is approaching closer to the presentation of the second generation X1, as evidenced by the prototype spied here wearing near-production front and rear end components like the headlamps.

While it keeps the same name as the current model, the next X1 is an entirely different car, as it ditches the previous generation 3-Series Tourer’s underpinnings for a front-wheel drive architecture borrowed from the new 2-series Active Tourer MPV.

BMW’s new UKL modular platform, which is also used on MINI’s latest three- and five-door hatchbacks, uses transversely mounted engines and offers the option of a four-wheel drive system, though, we suspect most X1s will be sold in FWD guise due to their better fuel economy, reduced CO2 output, and lower prices.

Speaking of engines, one doesn’t need to look any further than the 2-Series Active Tourer’s range to get a rough idea of the lineup, which will include BMW’s new 3-cylinder, 1.5-liter turbocharged and 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter petrol and diesel units, likely topping out with a 231PS (228hp) 2.0-liter turbo’d gasoline mill – unless the rumors of an M X1 turn out to be real.

In terms of design, the new X1 will incorporate styling cues from the bigger X3 and X5 SUVs into a more compact package.
