There’s nothing wrong with the rear-wheel drive Jaguar F-Type, but the carmaker is reportedly preparing an all-wheel drive version which may debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show next month.

The four-wheel drive F-Type will likely wear the AWD moniker, just like the Jaguar XJ and XF do in the United States. The reason for an all-wheel drive F-Type is that Jaguar’s sports car needs to keep up with the Porsche 911, which offers several four-wheel drive versions.

Furthermore, all-wheel drive will likely boost the F-Type’s appeal in regions with cold climates such as the northern part of North America and Alpine countries in Europe. A 4×4 system will effectively double the F-Type range’s market coverage, extending the appeal of the roadster and coupe.

According to a report from CAR, Jaguar will offer the all-wheel drive system with both the V6 and V8 powertrains. However, it’s not clear yet whether it will also be available with the upcoming six-speed manual transmission.

Besides the AWD badge, four-wheel drive Jaguar F-Type models will be easy to spot due to a bulge in the bonnet needed to accommodate the extra driveshafts and differentials that will be fitted to the cars.

The F-Type AWD is expected to debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2014 and will arrive in North American dealerships in early 2015. The model is also tipped to be offered in right-hand drive for the UK, with market launch scheduled for March 2015.
