F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone is still adamant about V8 engines and the fact that they need to come back, though he currently faces an uphill battle on this issue.
Ecclestone hasn’t exactly been a fan of the new turbocharged hybrid V6 units and has been vocal about how…non-vocal the engines are – which is something a lot of people agree with, even though it doesn’t actually affect the race itself.
He also believes that returning to V8 engines that could produce 1,000 HP would help with audience numbers as well as sponsors.
“We need to go back to engines whose costs are more reasonable, and we need to intervene with maximum urgency,” said Ecclestone before adding that “We’d just need to take the old V8 engines and modify them by increasing displacement to bring power output near 1000bhp.”
We doubt teams are going to agree to switch back to V8 units anytime soon, but we like the idea of 1,000 HP, no matter how unrealistic it is today.
Ecclestone plans to talk directly to Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne “as soon as possible”, but even if those talks go well, nothing major can happen with the engines at least until the 2017 season.
