The 1991 GMC Syclone may be classified as a pickup truck, but GM made sure to fit a notice telling customers the vehicle “is not intended for off road use” because of its reduced ride height.

That’s a strange thing to say to someone who had just bought a pickup, but the truth is the Syclone was more sports car than truck.

GMC built just under 3,000 Syclones in 1991 and Jay Leno got hold of one. He bought it new, charmed by GMC’s claim that it was the fastest accelerating production vehicle in the United States, beating out even the Ferrari 348.

The Syclone went from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.3 seconds, which is still a great performance nowadays. Jay used the vehicle as his daily driver car for years and nothing went wrong with it in more than two decades of ownership. Scroll down to find out what’s it like to drive.
